“A national disgrace”: Republicans blast Pentagon’s “unacceptable” Ukrainian weapons freeze

Pro-Ukraine Republicans are up in arms over the Trump administration’s halting of scheduled shipments of missiles and munitions to Ukraine.

The move by the Pentagon comes amid a tripling of drone strikes on the country in the last six months and just after Russia launched the largest aerial attack on Ukraine to date.

On Wednesday, Republican Rep. Brian Fitzpatrick expressed “serious concern” and promised to “aggressively” look into the matter. Fitzpatrick, co-chair of the Congressional Ukraine Caucus, posted a letter to President Donald Trump and urged the president to provide “needed assistance to our allies who are defending their freedom from brutal invading dictators.”

Former Congressman Adam Kinzinger called on Republicans in the House to demand more funding for Ukraine, as part of a quid pro quo for Trump’s “big, beautiful bill.”

“How about, as part of your vote, you ask for twenty billion for Ukraine?” Kinzinger said in a video posted to X.

Chairman of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs Michael McCaul, R-Texas, said the Pentagon’s decision came at the wrong time in the war.

We can’t let Putin prevail now,” McCaul in wrote on social media.  “Now is the time to show Putin we mean business.”

Former CIA Director Mike Pompeo noted that Ukraine did not ask for U.S. intervention, but for “weapons to defend their homeland” against “Russian attacks.”

Letting Russia win this war would be a unmitigated disaster for the American people and our security around the world,” Pompeo said in a statement.

Republicans for Ukraine, a coalition of GOP members who advocate for continued support for Ukraine offered a more blunt statement in a post on X.

“This is a national disgrace,” they wrote.
