The Trump administration has futilely projected a victory in its trade war with Canada, despite the obvious losses for the American public.
The White House’s official X account shared an image of a bald eagle attacking a Canada goose Wednesday, responding to a statement released the day before claiming that “President Trump is finally ending Canada’s free ride.”
“Canada has been ripping off the United States for decades—and President Donald J. Trump is done letting them get away with it,” the statement continued. The White House derided Canada’s previous trade commitments as “abuse” and insisted that, rather than negotiate, Canada “chose unreasonable demands, walk-backs, and flat-out rejection.”
But that’s not true.
What also isn’t true is that the Bald Eagle did not prevail over the Canada Goose. How is that possible? An apex predator shouldn’t lose to a squawking herbivore, but apparently that’s what happened, according to the photographer who caught the nearly 20-minute fight on film. via Daily Beast:
Quoting its own “article” on X, which claimed that Trump, 80, “is finally ending Canada’s free ride,” the White House posted a photo of a bald eagle with its talons on the neck of a Canada goose, face down on an icy Lake Ontario.
However, the full story of that encounter reveals an outcome unfavorable to the White House: the goose prevailed. And so it didn’t take long for the White House’s post, which had 4.1 million views as of publication, to be met with context from X users.
“This photo is from a documented 20-minute encounter on frozen Lake Ontario where a bald eagle attacked a Canada goose. The goose fought back and survived after the eagle gave up and retreated,” the reader-generated caption read.
