After many AI leaders warned about the effects artificial intelligence may have on humanity, while CEO of Anthropic Dario MOD, issued a proposal to slow down the development for public safety, Speaker Mike Johnson claimed there’s no need for intervention because AI can self-regulate away all your concerns.
During Jebus Johnson’s presser, he was asked about the worries being told to the world by AI CEOs and developers, and he responded by telling them to eat cake.
JOHNSON: So, if you’re Dario, or Sam, or any of the big providers, those two lead frontier labs in the development of AI.
And what happens next?
They can self-police, they can self-regulate. They don’t need the government to tell them to slow it down. If they want to slow it down, they should.
But we cannot have a moratorium on the development of AI, because then we will lose our edge to China.
And that has serious national security implications for every American family.
So there’s a balance here.
There is a lot the government can do to slow down the industry without putting a moratorium on all AI development. But Mike Johnson can’t say that because his Lord and Savior Donald Trump is all in on data centers, AI, and bitcoin. Using China as a scare tactic is unrealistic and boorish.
What the US learned from its experience with the Industrial Revolution, and the titans of industry in the Gilded Age, was that they cannot self-regulate.
Monopolies formed, destroying competition in the US, destroying collective bargaining, and hurting the public. Government intervention was necessary.
Speaker Johnson does not run the House of Representatives for the people who elected the chamber. He runs it for one man alone.
It’s shameful.
