An Alabama state representative and the former president of the Satsuma City Schools Board of Education were arrested Friday on charges of attempted human trafficking.

According to court documents filed Monday morning, Rep. Brett Easterbrook, R-Fruitdale, and Kory Wesley, the former president of the Satsuma City Schools Board of Education, were arrested by the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office Friday afternoon. The documents described the arrests as part of a sting operation, but did not provide further details.

Messages seeking comment were left with the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office and Satsuma City Schools Monday morning. Attempts to reach Easterbrook were not successful. As of mid-Monday morning, neither Easterbrook nor Wesley had attorneys listed in court documents.

Satsuma City Schools said in a statement posted to their website Monday that Wesley had resigned from the board on Sunday evening. The statement said the mayor and city council of Satsuma will move to fill the position, and that Satsuma City Schools “remains committed to its core values of growth, community and high expectations.”

Both men were initially charged with first-degree human trafficking, but prosecutors Monday moved to reduce the charges to attempted human trafficking, writing that because the operation was a sting, no victim was involved.  The charge carries a maximum penalty of up to 20 years in prison.

Easterbrook was additionally charged with soliciting prostitution, and Wesley was charged with attempting to elude an officer. Both charges are a Class A misdemeanor, punishable by up to one year in county jail. They were released within an hour of being arrested.

Messages seeking comment were left with Alabama House Speaker Nathaniel Ledbetter, R-Rainsville.

Easterbrook was first elected to the Alabama House in 2018. He served as vice chair of the House Insurance Committee, and also served on Agriculture and Forestry, Transportation & Utilities and the House Ways and Means General Fund committees. In the House, he mainly sponsored local bills and legislation related to construction. Easterbrook was not seeking re-election this year.

Editor’s note: This is a developing story and will be updated with more information.
