“Am I going to heaven, chat?”: Carpenter-hosted “SNL” imagines Trump on tween podcast

The only thing “Saturday Night Live” loves more than an overlong current events cold open is running a successful joke into the ground. With Sabrina Carpenter hosting, the cast couldn’t pass up the chance to revive Marcello Hernandez‘s Domingo at the top of the show, preempting the standard spot for Donald Trump‘s shenanigans.

Trump’s moment of the night ended up feeling tacked on, as James Austin Johnson appeared suddenly in an already solid sketch about Gen Alpha slang and inane podcasts for teenage boys. The skit followed the “Snack Homiez,” a cadre of 12-year-olds who talk over each other, trying to determine which foods are “fire” and which foods are “chopped.” The slang terms get muddled as the topic turns to vegetables, a fun bit of comical confusion that the writers seemed afraid to linger on.

Trump appears suddenly in the middle of the table, discussing snack cakes and foreign policy. Johnson’s Trump pushes his personal grievances to an increasingly confused group of tweens, touching on the No Kings protests and his ongoing concern with his eternal soul. On the former, he says the marches are a celebration of George Santos’ freedom.

“You know who I do like is George Santos. He’s weird. He’s a liar. I think he’s great,” Austin’s Trump says. “The people are marching because they’re happy he’s free, right? It’s a ‘yes, king’ march.”

Trump then turns the tables on the Homiez to ask about the afterlife.

“Am I going to heaven, chat?” he said. “Do I fit the criteria in terms of Christianity and in regard to St. Peter and pearly gates?”
