Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts thought that there was enough of a debatable legal question about Trump’s authority to destroy the White House and build a ballroom.

Roberts wrote in the order:
UPON CONSIDERATION of the application of counsel for the applicants, the response, and the reply filed thereto,
IT IS ORDERED that the preliminary injunction entered on April 16, 2026, by the United States District Court for the District of Columbia, case No. 1:25-cv-4316, is hereby stayed pending further order of the undersigned or of the Court.
CNN reported:
Construction has been progressing rapidly, with a 250-person crew working 20-hour days, 7 days per week, according to a filing submitted by the Trump administration to the Supreme Court. The government put the ballroom complex at “65% complete in its entirety.”
The order from Chief Justice John Roberts, who handles emergency cases rising from the DC Circuit Court of Appeals, did not set a new deadline, meaning the construciton can continue at the White House until the Supreme Court issues another order.
If the conservative majority decides to drag its feet hearing the case, the ballroom might be finished before the Supreme Court issues another ruling.
